Save me a bike
A culture, not a classNanaimo, BCDoors open Sunday, November 1. Founding list closes then, or at 50.

Come for the ride.
Stay for the room.

Culture of Sweat is a journey ride studio in Nanaimo. Same bikes as spin, a different hour. A rave at 9 a.m., sober. Thirteen songs, one from every bike. Your own week rehearsed on the bike before it happens. Every class carries a 1, 2 or 3 so you walk in on purpose, and most are a 1 or a 2. Thirty one classes a week, every one included, a room that knows your name, and a bike fitted to you before ride one.

A dozen rides done. A coach who says your name at the door. A room you walk into without thinking about it. That is what thirty days here does, and if it does not, you pay nothing.

01 · The founding 50

What do the first 50 get that nobody after them will?

Fifty spots. Not fifty one. Everything on this list, for a price that never moves. Thirteen bikes is small on purpose. It is the size of a room where everyone knows everyone, and nobody disappears.

03 · How it works

Which level is yours?

Three levels, nine classes, thirty one a week. The number beside every class is how hard it is, so you walk in on purpose. Every class runs on the same thirteen bikes, your first three rides are always a 1 or a 2, and noon is always a 1. The sentence test is not a slogan. Thirty years of exercise psychology say the same thing: below the point where you can no longer talk, exercise feels good, and people who feel good keep coming back.

1Easy.

A journey ride. You can say a full sentence the whole way. Nobody stands. Nobody is watched. The coach talks about a fifth of the time and never shouts. The hour is about you.

2Moderate.

Still a journey. Most classes, most days. Talk pace with heavy slow climbs, standing optional, and a sentence at any point. If spin always felt too hard, start here or at a 1.

3Intense.

The push. Sprints, standing climbs, effort up to ten, and a playlist that does the pushing. For people who came to sweat and want to be told to go harder. Labelled, so you walk in on purpose.

04 · The experiences

Pick a feeling. There is a ride for it.

05 · The week

What does a week here look like?

Thirty one classes a week. Twenty four you can talk through, seven that will not let you. Noon is always a 1. Every class comes around on a morning, a lunch and an evening, so the week fits around your life, not ours.

06 · The program of the month

What happens when twelve people do the same hard thing for a month?

One program a month, chosen by the studio. 99 for members, included for the founding 50. Twelve people at a time, a start and an end, four weeks on a practice with evidence behind it. When a block fills, a second one opens. You finish with the thing you came for and eleven people who watched you do it. November is Reset. December is The Write. January is Dry. A program is 99 on its own, or 199 for a non member with unlimited rides for its length.

NovemberResetFour weeks, twelve rides. By the end, showing up is the easy part.
DecemberThe WriteFour weeks. Ride, then fifteen minutes of writing nobody reads.
JanuaryDryFour weeks without a drink, with the studio as your Saturday night.
Breath SchoolFour weeks. One slow pattern a week. Watch your own numbers move.
SleepFour weeks. Deep rest twice a week, one wake time.
KindFour weeks. Four people on every ride. One of them is you.
Look UpFour weeks. One ride a week, one walk on your own. Your week gets smaller.
You and MeFour weeks, in pairs. Four rides, thirty six questions, one shared card a week.
FoundersFour weeks. A Tuesday ride, then twenty minutes on one lesson of running a business.
MomsFour weeks. The hour that is only yours. Twelve of you, talk pace, and nobody needs anything from you.

All ten programs, and what you leave with

07 · Is it for you

Who is this for?

Come if you are

  • Someone who avoided spin because of the intensity. Twenty four of the thirty one classes here are a 1 or a 2.
  • Someone who wants to feel strong and calm, in that order, and wants somewhere to belong while they do it.
  • A former athlete who wants the competitive hit without the injury. The level 3 classes are yours.
  • Someone who has never done this and is nervous about looking lost. The bike fit exists for exactly that, and the coach has seen it a hundred times.

Probably not your place if

  • You are shopping on price. The rec centre is cheaper, and it should be.
  • You want to disappear into a crowd. Thirteen bikes means we know when you are here, and we notice when you are not.
  • You only show up when someone shouts. Nobody here will.

08 · Questions

Questions people ask

Is this spin?

No. The bikes are the same. The hour is not. Culture of Sweat is a journey ride studio: nine classes, a number on every one, and talk pace as the default. If you avoided spin because of the intensity, this was built for you. If you love the intensity, the level 3 classes are yours, seven times a week.

What are the three levels?

1 is Easy: a journey ride, a full sentence the whole way, nobody stands, nobody is watched. 2 is Moderate: still a journey, most classes, most days, talk pace with heavy slow climbs and standing optional. 3 is Intense: the push, sprints, standing climbs, effort up to ten, labelled so you walk in on purpose. Your first three rides are always a 1 or a 2, and noon is always a 1.

What are the nine classes?

Three at every level. Level 1: Grounding, Breathwork and Your Song, where every rider brings one song. Level 2: Intention Journey, Visualization and Sunday Service, which ends on the floor in a sound bath. Level 3: Intervals, Hills and Morning Rave. Thirty one classes a week between them, every one included.

What is a founding member?

One of the first 50 members. Every class at every level, Sunday Service included, and every program of the month included with first seat, for 149 a month locked for as long as the membership stays continuous, with a numbered founding tee, a private bike fit, a monthly guest pass and the room to yourself once a year, a private ride for you and twelve.

What does it cost after the 50 spots are gone?

189 a month for every class and every experience. The program of the month is 99 on top, or 199 for a non member with unlimited rides for its length. Drop in rides are 28. Founding members keep 149 for life with every program included.

Is there a guarantee?

Yes. Ride for 30 days. If you do not feel calmer, stronger, or more at home in the room than the day you walked in, we refund the month.

I have never done anything like this. Will I be lost?

No. Every founding member gets a private 20 minute bike fit and first ride with a coach before their first class, and the first three rides are always a 1 or a 2. There are 13 bikes in the room and nobody is watching you.

What are the programs?

One runs every month, chosen by the studio, 99 for members and included for the founding 50: four weeks for twelve people at a time, built on a practice with evidence behind it. When a block fills, a second one opens. November is Reset, December is The Write, January is Dry. Also on the shelf: Breath School, Sleep, Kind, Look Up, You and Me, Founders, Moms. A program is 99 on its own, or 199 for a non member with unlimited rides for its length.

How long is a class, and how do I book?

Most rides are 45 minutes. Sunday Service runs an hour. Booking is in the app once the doors open; founding members get their login the week before November 1.

When do I pay?

Nothing now. Saving a bike costs nothing and there is nothing to cancel. Founding spots are confirmed in the last week of October, and the first month is charged on November 1.

Do I need cycling shoes?

No. Every pedal has a cage, so any runner works. Clip in if you have them.

Can I pause, and can I bring my kids?

One free pause of up to a month each membership year, requested in the app; your rate resumes when you do. The studio is adults only during class.

09 · Save your bike

Save your bike before the doors open.

Spots go in the order people join. When the doors open, you get first call on one of the 50. No payment now, nothing to cancel, and a bike fit with a coach before your first ride. The doors open on a Sunday, the first of the month. If you were waiting for a clean start, this is the one.
